Blackstrap BBQ in Winthrop

If there’s one thing I love more than bacon, it’s barbecue. Finger lickin’, dirty napkin, barbeque. The real deal.

A couple weeks ago my friend Kate mentioned that there was a new barbecue restaurant opening in Winthrop. I was automatically intrigued because Winthrop, although it’s a small town that most people have never heard of, knows food. Kate’s boyfriend lives there and the last handful of restaurants I’ve been to with them have all been great. They’re little off-the-beaten-path spots, right near the ocean, kept a secret from all the city-goers 😉 Well, until now.

Blackstrap BBQ opened last week so, naturally, Kate and I had to pay a visit their first weekend in business. This past Saturday we stopped in around 8ish for dinner. As we approached I could just sort of tell I’d like the place. The floor to ceiling windows, the wall chalkboard that was visible from the street, and the bright red cheery door. Plus, the second we exited the car the barbecue aroma filled the outdoors and it smelled like Heaven! Or how I imagine Heaven to smell.

The colorful wall chalkboard was filled with delicious sounding items that happened to make my stomach growl a little bit more than it already was.

Behind the counter, you can see the chef and cooks preparing all of the food and no one was more excited than them. They were all seeming to have a great time yelling out orders! The atmosphere was warm and cozy especially on a very chilly October evening. The restaurant itself is a bit small, fitting maybe 4 small square tables on the floor and there are window seats with stools as well. If you don’t want to wait for a table to open up, take-out is always an option, which it seemed like a bunch of people were doing!

(sidenote: I want that mirror.)

Lucky for us, a table opened up pretty quickly, so as I ordered at the counter, Kate saved the table for us. Now, whenever I try a new restaurant I get a bit overwhelmed. I want to try everything at once and roll myself out of the door. I think I forget that I can come back another time to try more things. With Foodbuzz Fest in San Fran coming up this week, I knew I should behave and attempt to pace myself.

So Saturday night, I knew I must try the ribs. You can order them per bone ($2.99/each) instead of ordering a rack, so I ordered two. They were perfectly prepared and definitely some of the best ribs I’ve had in a while. The little bit of spiciness they offered went a long way. We were also dying to try The Perfect Storm, which they call REAL smashed potatoes. They include bacon, caramelized onions, roasted garlic, and sour goat cheese. And yes, they were delicious. Mac and cheese was obviously involved in this meal, mostly because I like dipping it into barbecue sauce 😉 Blackstrap’s mac and cheese is something special. When you lift your fork and cheese is literally hanging from the tines, you know you’ve found a wonderful thing!

A big hunk of cornbread should always be involved while eating bbq 😉 And although I forgot to photograph it, Blackstrap has a wide variety of delicious sauces. I tried their signature sweet bbq sauce which is definitely a new favorite!

Goodbye for now Blackstrap. I will be back soon to warm up my soul this winter with a bowl of Grammy Kath’s Rip Your Lips Off Chili and definitely next summer after spending the day on the beach 🙂

What a cool spot! I love restaurants that have chalkboard menus. The food looks great- home style, perfect! And a good hunk of cornbread goes a long way. So jealous of your trip to Food Buzz- have fun!

Oh you are the devil. For all the yummy food we have in this country, meat is just not our forte – and I’m a total carnivore!

P.S. Regarding your name – I am glad that you’re not Martha! I think you guys add so much more of a real-life, food-lover’s element to entertaining.

I love BBQ! I think it’s great that they’ll let you order ribs individually, and I’m a huge mac and cheese lover as well, so I can only imagine how great it was. The “real” smashed potatoes sound Heavenly as well. Gosh, now I’m craving BBQ, haha!

This place looks great! I also just learned of a small Indian market in Winthrop where I bought every spice needed for a real Indian meal for under $10!!! I highly recommend it! 🙂

  5. Oh yum! I’ve never been to an authentic BBQ joint but it’s something I’ve been meaning to do. I’d be all over those potatoes!!

The mirror you mentioned that you want looks like one that I bought at IKEA for about $99. You would need to paint it that bright color though becuase it comes in a dark wood brown.

  13. I can’t wait to get there to try the great food.

  14. Katie says:
