I had so many ideas for what I wanted to do with this Halloween cookie dough. I mean, the holiday is all about candy and sweets and there are way too many things I could have put in this cookie dough to make it delicious.
I thought about making it a chocolate cookie dough. I thought about adding peanut butter. I even considered adding little Oreo cookie pieces.
But ultimately, I decided to keep it simple with a vanilla cookie dough loaded with Halloween candy. Not only is it easy to make, but it's totally customizable to you and your family's tastes.
Which means, yes, you can leave the candy corn out if you want!
❤️ Why you'll love this recipe
Edible cookie dough is always a fun treat and is often a unique dessert to bring to a Halloween party (bring it along with these Halloween jello shots and you'll be the hit of the party!). Plus, it's a great way to use up all that Halloween candy!
The cookie dough itself is very easy to make and you can either make it just how I did or add whatever candy suits your tastes.
It keeps well in the fridge and is so fun for weekend spooky movie watching!
🗒 Ingredients
You don't need much to make edible Halloween cookie dough and, as I mentioned, you can add in (or take out) any candy you want. Here's what I use in mine (see recipe card at the bottom of this post for ingredient amounts and full instructions):
- Unsalted butter
- Granulated sugar
- Vanilla extract
- Salt
- All-purpose flour (make sure to view section on heat treating the flour)
- Milk
- Halloween M&Ms
- Candy corn
- Peanut butter chips
- Candy eyes, optional
If you prefer chocolate chips to peanut butter chips, use them! If you love peanut butter M&Ms, use those instead. And if you can't stand candy corn, you can obviously omit it.
I actually meant to include pretty Halloween sprinkles in my edible cookie dough, but totally forgot. But they would give the dessert a fun look, especially if you can't find a lot of Halloween colored candies.
🥣 How to heat treat flour
Did you know that it's flour and not eggs that is often the cause of foodborne illness in raw cookie dough?
Raw flour can have bacteria in it that can lead to illnesses like E. coli (source). To ensure your raw cookie dough is safe to eat, you should always bake your flour before using it. Don't worry, it's easy! But if you don't want to do this, you can actually purchase flour that's already been heat treated.
🍪 How to make Halloween cookie dough
Making this edible Halloween cookie dough is so easy... Just like making cookies except you don't have to roll the dough into balls, put them on a baking sheet, and bake them. You just make the dough and eat it!
Simply cream the butter and sugar together in the bowl of a mixer or in a large bowl with a hand mixer, until light and fluffy, 3-4 minutes.
Add vanilla and salt and blend until combined.
With mixer on low, slowly add flour to bowl until well combined. Keep mixer on low and add 5 tablespoon milk in until dough comes together. If cookie dough seems too thick, you can add an additional tablespoon or two of milk.
I use 5 tablespoon of milk because I like my cookie dough nice and firm. But if you like it a little bit fluffier, you can add more until it's to your liking.
Now for the Halloween candy! Like I mentioned, I used seasonal M&Ms, candy corn, and peanut butter chips.
But use whatever you choose! You could even just add Halloween sprinkles and chocolate chips to keep things simple.
Fold the candy into the cookie dough until just combined.
Unlike when making actual cookies, it's OK if you over-mix the dough a bit since you're not baking it!
If you're serving this Halloween cookie dough at a party or to kids, I highly recommend getting a pack of candy eyes and adding them on after scooping it into bowls.
How cute! Chris said they made the cookie dough look like little Muppets. I'm OK with my dessert looking like a friendly monster, but if you want something a bit scarier, you can get bloody candy eyes.
No matter how you decorate your Halloween cookie dough, it's going to be a huge hit amongst kids and adults alike!
You can serve it in individual little cups at a Halloween party. Or sit on the couch and share a bowl of it during a spooky movie watching marathon.
Just take care not to eat too much. This is the kind of treat that's really hard to stop eating. It's so delicious!

🍬 Other delicious addition ideas
If you want more ideas on what to add to the Halloween cookie dough, I'm happy to offer many! I will happily add candy corn into all the desserts I make during the fall season, but I totally understand why others may not be a fan of it. Here are more ideas on what to add:
- Chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, white chocolate chips
- Mini marshmallows
- Halloween sprinkles
- Chopped Oreo cookies (especially the Halloween Oreos)
- Peanut, peanut butter, caramel M&Ms, or the flavor of your choice
- Reese's Piece or chopped Reese's Cups
- Yogurt-covered raisins
- Nuts
- Food coloring: You can use orange and black food coloring to achieve a holiday look
⏲ How to store
You can store any uneaten cookie dough in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge for about 5 days. I think it's extra delicious when chilled!
You can also scoop the dough into balls and freeze it on a cookie sheet. Then place the frozen scoops in a Ziploc bag and keep it in your freezer for up to 6 months. You'll want to let it thaw fully before enjoying as the candy will be quite hard.
👻 More Halloween treats
There's nothing I love more in the fall than snuggling up on the couch with a good movie and a great snack. I have lots of fun Halloween dessert recipe ideas that are perfect for movie watching or entertaining. Here are some of my favorites:
- Halloween Party Popcorn
- Halloween Trail Mix
- Candy Corn Ice Cream
- Halloween Cakesicles
- Candy Corn Toffee
- Halloween Cinnamon Rolls

This Halloween treat is packed with so many of my favorite seasonal things, but I love that it's so easy for you to customize it with your own favorites!
Who needs to go trick-or-treating when you have this waiting for you at home??
📖 Recipe
Halloween Cookie Dough
Ingredients
- 1 ½ sticks unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (see notes on how to heat treat for safety)
- 5-7 tablespoon milk
- ¾ cup Halloween M&Ms
- ½ cup candy corn
- ⅓ cup peanut butter chips
- candy eyes, optional
Instructions
- In the bowl of a mixer or in a large bowl with a hand mixer, cream butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, 3-4 minutes.
- Add vanilla and salt and blend until combined.
- With mixer on low, slowly add flour to bowl until well combined. Keep mixer on low and add 5 tablespoon milk in until dough comes together. If cookie dough seems too thick, you can add an additional tablespoon or two of milk (I like my cookie dough firm, so I just use 5 Tbsp).
- Fold in M&Ms, candy corn, and peanut butter chips (or whatever candy you choose to use).
- Scoop cookie dough into bowls and top with candy eyes if using.
Notes
- To ensure flour is safe for eating (raw flour can cause foodborne illness), you should bake it before using. Just spread flour on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for about 5 minutes. Let cool before using in cookie dough.
