This morning I had a perfect bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. It got me thinking about how great oatmeal is. It’s inexpensive and so versatile and it’s also good for your skin. Then I started thinking “I should make my own scrubs with oatmeal” which turned into “I should make my own scrubs with any natural ingredient I have laying around!”
So, I really love all natural body scrubs and just used up the last of my Ocean Salt from Lush. It’s one of my most favorite scrubs but it’s not exactly cheap. I’m taking lots of trips within the next few months so I’ve decided to make an attempt to not indulge in “unnecessary” treats (eeeek!) I did a little research online this afternoon and did some experimentation to see if I could create my own body scrubs with some ingredients that can be found in any kitchen. Success was had!
Every website I looked at had tons of different ideas and combinations, from oatmeal to avocado to essential oils, but I wanted to keep this as simple as possible just to see how my skin took it… it’s quite sensitive!
The article I liked best was from thekitchn.com (apartment therapy‘s sister site!) and I think I liked it best because they did some experimentation, which is exactly what I was looking to do. It’s a great way to study how the oils are absorbed into the sugars and salts and to just play around with measurements, instead of making huge batches that don’t work.
The three mixtures I tried out were:
• granulated sugar
• brown sugar
• coarse sea salt
All three were mixed with olive oil. I added a splash of lemon juice to all three as well, because really, I don’t want my entire body smelling like olive oil. 🙂
For the granulated sugar scrub I started with 2 tablespoons of oil and 2 tablespoons of the sugar.
For the brown sugar scrub, I started with 2 tablespoons of oil and 4 tablespoons of sugar. I ended up adding probably another 1 1/2 tablespoons of the brown sugar because it’s so fine it wasn’t really absorbing the oils as well as I would have liked.
For the sea salt scrub I started with 2 tablespoons of oil and 3 tablespoons of the salt. I ended up adding in another tablespoon of salt so it wouldn’t be as oily.
The fun thing about this is you can continue to add the ingredients until you get a consistency that you’re satisfied with. I think following a recipe is a great idea to help guide you initially, but of course, don’t be afraid to toss in other ingredients and experiment! There are plenty of floral and herbal scented oils sold at health food stores that you can mix in too! I think that’s going to be my next step 🙂
After I mixed up the scrubs, I sampled them out by doing a hand treatment and I decided that my two favorites were the granulated sugar scrub and the coarse sea salt scrub. I liked the granulated sugar one best for my hands, since the the skin there is more delicate and the sugar is a little gentler. I put the two favorites in small bowls and showered with them! The sea salt scrub was fantastic to use on the rest of my body! Ta-Ta dry skin!
I honestly thought these scrubs would just be “okay” but after I got out of the shower and patted my skin dry it was literally glowing! It felt just like it would using any of those expensive body scrubs except it felt even better knowing I whipped them up myself in about 5 minutes! It was so refreshing and I plan on making this weekly! I’ll keep you updated on any new concoctions I come up with 🙂
