Ingredients

Dirty Chai Latte with Tea Bags

  • 2 chai tea bags
  • ½ cup (4 oz.) boiling water
  • ¼ cup (2 oz.) strong espresso
  • 1-3 teaspoon simple syrup, honey, agave, granulated sugar, or brown sugar, for sweetening
  • ¾ cup (6 oz) 2% milk (or dairy/non-dairy alternative of your choice), divided
  • Ground cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom, for topping

Dirty Chai Latte with Concentrate

  • ½ cup (4 oz.) chai tea concentrate
  • ¼ cup (2 oz.) boiling water
  • ½ cup (2 oz.) strong espresso
  • ¾ cup (6 oz) 2% milk (or dairy/non-dairy alternative of your choice), divided
  • Ground cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom, for topping

Instructions

Dirty Chai Latte with Tea Bags

  • In a heat-proof glass or mug, steep tea bags in the hot water for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Pour brewed espresso into tea mixture. Mix in sweetener of choice.
  • Steam ½ cup milk and froth remaining ¼ cup milk. You can either steam milk on the stovetop/in the microwave and froth milk in an electric frother or with a handheld frother/whisk OR steam and froth all the milk together in a mason jar or heat-proof container (see notes for how-to).
  • Pour steamed milk into tea and top with frothed milk. Sprinkle on cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom.

Dirty Chai Latte with Concentrate

  • Pour chai concentrate into a heat-proof glass and add boiling water.
  • Pour brewed espresso into mixture.

Notes

  • For an extra creamy latte, you can use all steamed milk instead of water in both renditions of the latte.
  • Strength of flavor will vary depending on the specific tea bags or concentrate you use and you can adjust amounts used to your tastes.
  • For steaming and frothing milk together in mason jar:
-Put all ¾ cup milk in a large mason jar or heat-proof container (it should only be half full), put the lid on, and shake the jar as hard as you can for about 30 seconds, until frothy.
-Remove lid and place the jar in the microwave for 45 seconds.
-Pour the steamed milk right into your espresso and spoon the froth on top.
