There's not much that peanut butter doesn't go with; from sweet treats to savory noodle dishes and everything in between.
The consistency of peanut butter is perfect for spreading, but sometimes you want a good PB flavored drizzle instead.
Enter peanut butter syrup. I make a lot of unique syrup flavors and this homemade peanut butter syrup may be one of the most versatile yet!
If you're a peanut butter lover, you're going to want a jar of this in your fridge at all times.
🗒 Ingredients
Peanut butter syrup is a bit thicker than the typical simple syrup. It's not quite a peanut butter sauce, but it's not a thin translucent syrup either.
When I first starting testing this, it was coming out too thick, but with a higher ratio of water, I got it to the perfect consistency.
It only requires 3 ingredients! Here's everything you need (be sure to view the recipe card at the bottom of this post for ingredient amounts and full recipe instructions):
- Water
- Smooth peanut butter: I recommend not using a natural peanut butter as they can be too oily
- Granulated sugar
🥜 How to make
If you've ever made a homemade syrup before, you'll be able to make this with no problem at all!
And if it's your first time making a syrup, you'll see just how easy it is.
Just peanut butter, granulated sugar, and water in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat.
Stir continuously with a whisk or wooden spoon as mixture heats to dissolve the sugar and fully mix the peanut butter into the liquid.
Once the mixture reaches a boil, the mixture should be fully blended. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until mixture has thickened.
Pour syrup into a mason jar or bowl and place in fridge to cool completely before using. The syrup will continue to thicken as it cools.
When ready to use, you may want thin syrup out a bit by heating it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds.
I want to sit and eat this by the spoonful.
But don't worry; there are lots of other ways to use it, too!
☕️ Ways to use
Peanut butter syrup can be enjoyed in SO many different ways; basically in anything you want to add peanut butter flavor to.
Here are some of my favorites ways to use it:
- Coffee Flavoring: The most obvious way to use this syrup is too add peanut butter flavor to hot and iced coffee! I'll have a peanut butter coffee recipe out for you soon, which will include how to make peanut butter cold foam!
- Yogurt or oatmeal topping: Add peanut butter sweetness to your healthy breakfasts.
- Pancake, waffle, or french toast topping: Instead of maple syrup, drizzle peanut butter syrup over your brunch dishes.
- Ice cream topping: This syrup makes the perfect peanut butter sauce for drizzling on ice cream.
- Cocktail addition: Peanut butter syrup makes an awesome addition to so many different cocktails, like old fashioneds, martinis (I'm dreaming of a peanut butter espresso martini!), white Russians, and so much more.
- Milkshake addition: Peanut butter syrup would be delicious in practically any milkshake creation. It can be added to homemade smoothies, too.
- Popcorn topping: Butter drizzled on popcorn is good, but peanut butter syrup drizzled over it is way more delicious!
- Bacon glaze: Brush peanut butter syrup onto bacon slices before baking them in the oven. The syrup will caramelize as the bacon cooks, creating a sticky, sweet coating that complements the salty bacon.
- Glaze or marinade for meats: You can use the syrup as a glaze or marinade for the meat of your choice, including pork, chicken, and and beef.
- Salad dressing: Include this peanut butter syrup in your homemade salad dressing for added sweet nutty flavor.
It would also be delicious on top of these peanut butter pancakes! But yes, you can also choose to just eat it with a spoon.
I am the last person to judge you!
⏲️ How to store
As with all my syrup recipes, I recommend storing this syrup in an airtight container in the fridge. I think mason jars are the easiest way to store syrup, but you can also use Tupperware or any airtight container you have.
When stored properly, peanut butter syrup should keep fresh for about 2 weeks. This is less time than most other homemade simple syrups due to the oils in peanut butter that are more susceptible to spoiling.
🎉 Variations on recipe
I love the simplicity of this easy peanut butter syrup, but there's lots you can do to jazz it up and change the flavor profile of it.
Here are some ideas:
- If the syrup is too thick for you, you can certainly add more than 1 ½ cups of water to thin it out a bit.
- Or you can make the syrup with water, sugar, and peanuts instead of peanut butter. I recommend following my recipe for pistachio syrup and replacing the pistachio nuts with peanuts.
- Mix in cocoa powder or melted chocolate to make a chocolate peanut butter syrup, like a peanut butter cup.
- Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili powder for a spicy syrup that's especially good for use in savory dishes.
- Add a vanilla bean pod or vanilla extract to the syrup while it's cooking for a deeper flavor profile.
- Add a little caramel sauce to your syrup for a peanut butter caramel syrup.
- Replace the granulated sugar with honey or maple syrup.
However you make it; you'll be able to use the syrup in all kinds of ways!
🛍️ Where to buy
If you don't want to make your own syrup, there are plenty of options for purchasing!
Note that store-bought peanut butter syrups will be much thinner than homemade as real peanut butter isn't used. It will be more like a simple syrup.
Here are some purchasing options:
- Monin Peanut Butter Syrup
- Torani Peanut Butter Syrup
- DaVinci Peanut Butter Syrup
- Syruvia Peanut Butter Cup Syrup
