If you love bananas and all things banana-flavored, you're going to want a jar of this homemade banana syrup in your fridge at all times.
It's a simple-to-make recipe with just 3 ingredients and adds banana flavor to anything your heart desires.
💜 Why this recipe works
Just 3 ingredients: chances are, you already have bananas, sugar, and water in your kitchen right now. And that's all it takes to make this syrup.
So many uses: this simple syrup has so many uses from making cocktails, making coffee drinks, and drizzling on breakfast foods and desserts.
Stays fresh: when stored properly, this homemade syrup keeps fresh for about a month in your fridge.
Easy to customize: there are so many ingredients you can add to this syrup to make it even more delicious and suited to your tastes.
🗒 Ingredients
Here are the three ingredients you need for this banana syrup recipe (be sure to view the recipe card at the bottom of this post for ingredient amounts and full recipe instructions):
- Water
- Granulated sugar
- Banana slices
👩🍳 Method
Making simple syrup is very easy (hence the name!) and this banana syrup is no exception.
All you have to do is combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
Once the mixture is boiling, lower the heat to a simmer and let simmer for about 10 minutes. During this time, the mixture will thicken and the bananas will be softening and breaking down.
Be sure to strain the bananas out of the syrup after it's done cooking. I recommend pressing down on them with a wooden spoon to extract as much liquid as possible.
And pour into a heat-proof jar or container that can be easily sealed.
Pop your homemade banana syrup in the fridge, so it can cool completely before you use it.
Of course, you need to take a little taste and you'll see that it tastes just like fresh bananas!
🍌 How to use banana syrup
There are so many ways you can use this banana syrup. Here are some recommendations:
- Coffee addition: you can use it to make delicious banana lattes. It's also delicious in iced coffee and is a great companion to flavored coffees (like chocolate or peanut butter!).
- Tea addition: it's also fun to add a little banana flavor to your hot or iced tea.
- Banana cocktails: this banana syrup can add a little tropical flair to all your cocktails, including homemade banana rum for banana mojitos and banana rum punch, banana vodka sodas, and creamy banana martinis.
- Homemade soda: It's hard to find banana soda in stores, but easy to make by mixing this syrup with seltzer water.
- Banana milk: another tasty treat not always available in stores that's easy to make at home.
- Pancake, waffle, and french toast topping: this makes the perfect drizzle for all your sweet brunch dishes.
- Yogurt or oatmeal drizzle: it also adds a little sweet flavor to your healthier breakfast options.
- Ice cream topping: and it makes the perfect ice cream topping, especially delicious on vanilla, chocolate, or peanut butter ice cream.
- Meat marinade: for flavors totally outside the box, add a little banana syrup to your marinades for pork, chicken, or fish!
- Frosting flavoring: it's easy to add a little bit of this syrup to your homemade buttercream frosting to turn it into a banana frosting.
- Cake moistener: A lot of professional bakers brush their homemade cakes with a little simple syrup to keep them moist and to add extra flavor. Banana complements vanilla and chocolate cake flavors perfectly.

⏲️ How to store
This simple syrup can stay fresh for about a month when stored properly in an airtight container (like a mason jar) in your fridge.
Did you know you can also freeze simple syrup? I recommend pouring any leftover syrup into ice cube trays to freeze and then storing the syrup cubes in a large freezer-safe bag.
When ready to use, remove from freezer and thaw.
When frozen, the syrup should keep for 3-4 months.
🎉 Variations on recipe
I love the simplicity of this banana syrup, but there are lots of add-ins you can use when making it to unlock whole new levels of flavor. So many flavors complement bananas!
