I will admit that I'm not much of a drinker these days. But when I heard about the concept of a breakfast shot, it sounded so delicious and fun, I had to give it a try.
You're likely used to mimosas or a bloody Marys at brunch, but have you ever just had a simple shot? One that tasted like pancakes with syrup? With an orange juice chaser? And an optional second chaser of bacon? Yes, a bacon chaser!
This drink is so much fun for a special brunch during a bachelor or bachelorette party or during a fun vacation weekend. It's also the perfect St. Patrick's Day drink.
And it's incredibly quick and simple to make!
🍊 What is a breakfast shot?
I told you what a breakfast shot tastes like (pancakes with maple syrup), but what exactly is in it? Just two simple ingredients!
This shot is made with just Irish whiskey (like Jameson) and butterscotch schnapps. And somehow those two ingredients come together to form a delicious pancake breakfast flavor experience.
And you can then turn it into a full brunch experience by taking a second shot of plain orange juice and then taking a bite of bacon.
🗒 Ingredients
As I mentioned, the ingredients are simple and you only need a few of them! Here's everything required for a breakfast shot (be sure to view the recipe card at the bottom of this post for ingredient amounts and full recipe instructions):
- Irish whiskey: I recommend Jameson Irish Whiskey for it's smoothness and subtle sweetness, but you can use the whiskey of your choice
- Butterscotch schnapps
- Orange juice
- Crispy bacon
🥃 How to make
Of course, there's nothing difficult about making shots and this one happens to be even easier than most since there's nothing fancy about it!
Just add 1 ounce of Irish Whiskey and 1 ounce of butterscotch schnapps to a shot glass.
And then add your 1 ounce of orange juice to a separate smaller shot glass.
Add some crispy bacon on the side.
And that's it! Your breakfast shot is ready to be enjoyed.
You can serve it with pancakes or you can just pretend it *is* pancakes since it actually tastes like it.
The orange juice and bacon round out a complete breakfast.
But seriously, you should definitely also be eating a full breakfast if you're drinking this shot!

🎉 How to make a non-alcoholic breakfast shot
Through some experimentation, I figured out a way to make a breakfast shot sans alcohol! This is fun for anyone who doesn't want to drink or who can't drink.
If you're serving to anyone under 21, I'd make it a "sipper" and have them sip the drink instead of taking it like a shot.
Here's what I'd use for a non-alcoholic breakfast shot:
- 1 oz apple juice: instead of Irish Whiskey
- 1 oz butterscotch syrup: instead of butterscotch schnapps. You can also use caramel syrup if it's easier to find.
- 1 oz orange juice
- 1 slice crispy bacon
This will be a little sweeter than the standard whiskey breakfast shot, but it will still have all the flavors of breakfast in a glass!
❓Can I use other kinds of whiskey?
You can use whatever kind of whiskey you want for this drink!
Irish whiskey is recommended for breakfast shots because it's generally smoother and lighter than other types of whiskey. It's also a bit milder with notes of honey, vanilla, and citrus, helping contribute to the pancake breakfast flavors.
We like Jameson best as it's often considered the gold standard of Irish whiskeys and it works best in this shot for several reasons. It's generally smoother, sweeter, and less smoky than other Irish whiskeys.
It's easy to drink, making it perfect for a shot. And it's generally more affordable than many whiskeys.
However, you can use any kind of whiskey you want for this drink! Each one will give your breakfast shot a slightly different profile, but that might be something you desire.
For similar Irish whiskeys, try Bushmills or Tullamore D.E.W. A bourbon whiskey will give you more sweetness and richness and a rye whiskey will add a little spice.
You could even try a maple whiskey to add to the pancake breakfast flavor!
