Imagine being a dog and never being able to experience the joy of eating a slice of pizza? And instead having to eat the same exact thing for basically every single meal (usually dry kibble at that).
As someone who probably spends a little too much time making sure my dog gets to experience all the joys in life, this has always bothered me. And after my dog begged and begged for one of my homemade pizza cupcakes, I decided to make her a dog-friendly pizza of her own.
These mini pizzas are made in a mini muffin tin and are absolutely packed with dog-friendly ingredients. They may not be the typical tomato sauce slathered pepperoni pizza, but something tells me your dog will love them!
🐶 Can dogs eat pizza?
Technically, traditional pizza is not a dog-friendly food. Not only does it often contain ingredients that are harmful to dogs, like garlic and onions, but pizza generally has a lot of fat and sodium in it, which isn't good for dogs.
I definitely wouldn't recommend giving your dog a slice of pizza. But that doesn't mean you can't make modifications to a traditional pizza that make it much more friendly for dogs and the ultimate special treat!
This pizza for dogs is made with a small amount of whole wheat dough, pumpkin puree, a little bit of cheese, and chicken.
Though all are generally dog-friendly ingredients in moderation (so long as your dog is not lactose intolerant), you should still be sure to check with your vet if you have any questions about introducing new foods to your dogs diet.
❤️ Why you'll love this recipe
You'll love this dog-friendly recipe mainly because it will make your pup so happy!
The mini dog-friendly pizzas are incredibly easy to make and can be stored in the fridge for a few days, so you can give your pup a special treat any time he or she is a good boy or girl! Which is probably always. Because dogs are the best.
🗒 Ingredients
I always try to keep my dog-friendly recipes as simple as possible in terms of ingredients. This one is no different. I make my own homemade whole wheat dough, though you can buy one if you prefer (I like to control the ingredients as much as possible in my recipes for dogs).
Here's everything you need for the dog pizzas (be sure to view the recipe card at the bottom of this post for ingredient amounts and full recipe instructions):
- Coconut oil: I use this for brushing the muffin tins. You can substitute with olive oil or another dog-friendly oil if you prefer.
- Whole wheat pizza dough: I share my recipe in this post or you can use store-bought
- Pumpkin puree: make sure it's not pumpkin pie filling as that has all kinds of spices and sweeteners in it.
- Shredded cheese: I recommend mozzarella or cheddar, but you can use your dog's favorite.
- Cooked and chopped chicken breast
If you're making your own pizza dough, here's what you need:
- Active dry yeast
- Lukewarm water: about 105-115 degrees
- Melted coconut oil: you can substitute with olive oil or another dog friendly oil if you prefer.
- Honey
- Whole wheat flour
🍞 How to make pizza dough for dogs
This is a small batch of whole wheat pizza dough and very easy to make.
Just mix the yeast and water in a large bowl and let rest for 2 minutes.
Stir coconut oil and honey into the mixture.
With a wooden spoon, mix whole wheat flour into the mixture. If dough feels too wet, you can add in another tablespoon flour. Form dough into a ball and gently knead a few times in the bowl.
Cover bowl with a kitchen towel and let rest in a warm spot for about 2 hours, so dough can rise.
Checking my dough after a couple hours and seeing it risen is one of my greatest joys!
This dough is enough for 24 mini pizza dog treats.
🍕How to make pizza for dogs
When you're ready to bake the pizzas, preheat your oven to 450 degrees and lightly brush a mini muffin tin with coconut oil.
Roll the dough out thinly and cut out 24 circles roughly 2 inches in diameter. You can use a circle cookie cutter, a drinking glass, etc.
Re-roll dough scraps when necessary.
Gently press dough circles into the bottoms of the tin, going up the sides. If you only have a 12-cavity tin, you'll do this in two batches.
Spoon about ¾ teaspoon of pumpkin puree into each dough cup.
I opted to use pumpkin puree because it's great for dogs (source) and tomato sauce isn't the best for them since it's so acidic.
Sprinkle with about 1 teaspoon of shredded cheese.
And a few pieces of chopped chicken.
And bake for about 8-10 minutes, until cheese is bubbling and edges of dough are turning golden.
Let the mini pizzas cool for a bit before giving to your dog to enjoy!
Aren't these the cutest little pizzas for dogs? I love how they puffed right up and how they're filled with so much dog-friendly goodness.
But the real question is... what did my dog think? You should know that Winnie is very picky and only has a handful of store-bought treats that she'll eat. I make a lot of dog-friendly recipes I have to throw away because she won't eat them... And if she doesn't eat them, I don't share them here.
So, just by seeing this recipe here, you know that she loved these!
I was absolutely thrilled since she isn't always the biggest pumpkin lover. But she's obsessed with chicken and cheese and I think those smells convinced her this was going to be a good treat!
⏲️ How to store
Once these mini pizzas are completely cooled, I recommend storing them in an airtight container in the fridge. When stored properly, they should keep fresh for about 5 days.
You can warm them before serving them to your dog, but your dog may also love them chilled!
You can also feel free to freeze the pizza for dogs in a large freezer-safe bag. They should stay fresh in the freezer for about 3 months and it's a great way to always have homemade dog treats on hand!
🎉 Variations on recipe
One of the great things about pizza for dogs is that you can totally customize it to your dog's taste. I love making mine with whole wheat dough, pumpkin puree, cheese, and chicken; but if your dog has other favorite foods, you can try them out!
Here are some ideas:
- Instead of chicken, use ground turkey, ground beef, diced turkey breast, or a little steak. If your dog loves salmon, you can try that, too.
- Instead of pumpkin puree, use mashed sweet potato, cottage cheese, or yogurt.
- Add other veggies like diced carrots, peas, spinach, green beans, broccoli, or beets.
- Make a sweet pizza for dogs with peanut butter or apple sauce, blueberries, and diced apples.
- Instead of whole wheat crust, you can make your crust with sweet potato, pumpkin or cauliflower. Or you can use rice flour, chickpea flour, or oat flour.
Really, the flavor options are endless and I think you'll easily be able to find a pizza for dogs recipe that's perfect for your pup!
