Do you dream of sipping on your own Harry Potter inspired Butterbeer at home? This

Even if you're not a Harry Potter book reader/movie watcher, you've probably heard of Butterbeer before.
In the books, Butterbeer is described as a slightly alcoholic beverage that tastes a bit like "less-sickly butterscotch".
It's been replicated lots of times, including at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in both cold and frozen form. It's a sweet drink that tastes a bit like cream soda, butterscotch syrup, and whipped cream.
Sounds delicious, right?
Though
Luckily, it's still super easy to make at home!
🧈 What is the Butterbeer Frappuccino?
The
This combination of syrups mixed with a creme Frappuccino base truly mimics the flavor of Butterbeer! Of course, this version is totally alcohol-free. It's coffee/caffeine-free, too!
🗒 Ingredients
Here's everything you need to make a Butterbeer Frappuccino at home (be sure to view the recipe card at the bottom of this post for ingredient amounts and full recipe instructions):
- Caramel sauce: you can use store-bought sauce or make a homemade batch (I recommend this recipe)
- Whole milk
- Heavy cream
- Toffee nut syrup: you can use store-bought or make your own with the recipe I provide
- Caramel syrup: you can use store-bought or make your own with the recipe I provide
- Xanthan powder: this helps thicken the Frappuccino. If you can't find it, you can substitute with cornstarch, but you'll need to use a little bit more.
- Ice
- Whipped cream: for topping
I often like to make my own syrups, but often purchase caramel sauce to always have on hand. But you can purchase everything or make everything from scratch!
🌰 How to make toffee nut syrup
Making a
Just put water, sugar, and toffee pieces in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil.
Lower heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes, until syrup has thickened a bit.
Strain syrup into a bowl, leaving any remaining toffee pieces behind.
Keep syrup in bowl or pour into a mason jar and place in fridge to cool completely before using.
You can store the toffee syrup in an airtight container in the fridge for about a month.
🍮 How to make caramel syrup
I also love making my own caramel syrup. Remember caramel syrup is different from caramel sauce and you need both for this Frappuccino.
To make the syrup, put the cup of sugar and ½ cup water in a medium saucepan and bring mixture to a boil while stirring occasionally.
Once sugar has dissolved, let mixture continue boiling without stirring. Watch closely for mixture to turn a light amber color.
It usually takes about 8-10 minutes for me, but it can go from light amber to being burnt very quickly, so be sure to watch closely.
Once mixture is light amber, immediately remove from heat and slowly and carefully pour remaining ½ cup water in. It will likely splatter and steam up, so stand back while pouring.
Add vanilla and stir well to combine.
Pour syrup into a heat-proof bowl or mason jar and place in fridge to cool completely. Syrup will continue to thicken as it cools.
This syrup should also keep fresh in the fridge for about a month in an airtight container.
🧋 How to make Frappuccino
Once your syrups and sauce are procured and completely cooled, you're ready to whip up this super easy Butterbeer Frappuccino.
Start by lining the inside of your cup with caramel sauce. This step is very important both for visual and flavor reasons!
Now, add milk, cream, toffee syrup, caramel syrup, xanthan gum, and ice to a blender and process until smooth and frothy.
Pour the Frappuccino into your caramel cup.
And top it with whipped cream and caramel sauce drizzle.
Take a sip and be automatically transported to Hogwarts.
This frozen drink is everything you've ever imagined Butterbeer to taste like. It's sweet and butterscotch-y without being too overpowering.
You can certainly see why it's such a popular drink in the world of Harry Potter!
And I love that we can enjoy it in our own generally non-magical world, too.
☕️ How to order at Starbucks
In the past, you would order a Butterbeer Frappuccino by asking for for a cup lined with caramel with a creme Frappuccino base with 3 pumps caramel syrup, 3 pumps toffee nut syrup, and whipped cream and a caramel drizzle.
But now
It's hard to get the flavor exactly right without the toffee, but some people say cinnamon dolce syrup adds a somewhat similar flavor. A little vanilla syrup can help, too.
Or you can just get the flavor exactly right by making the Butterbeer Frappuccino at home!
