Tofu in a smoothie? I know what you're thinking. You might not even like tofu when it's pan-fried and tossed in a delicious sauce; why would you want it in a smoothie?
Because it's the perfect smoothie ingredient. Please trust me on this one.
❓ Why you should add tofu to smoothies
Tofu is kind of like a blank canvas. It doesn't have a lot of flavor to it. But what it does have is a lot of protein and other vitamins and nutrients. Plus it has an amazingly creamy consistency, making it the perfect addition to a smoothie.
Even if you're not the biggest fan of tofu, try it in a smoothie and you'll likely realize you can't even taste it... But you're still getting all the health benefits!
I'm excited to be working with Shaw's Supermarket today to tell you all about their delicious range of plant-based products and share with you the recipe for my almond butter and jelly smoothie.
While I love making and eating all kinds of treats, I really do eat a pretty balanced diet packed with plant-based foods and Shaw's helps me do that. As we're celebrating the new year, I know lots of you are also trying to kickstart healthier habits when it comes to eating!

🗒 Ingredients
I decided to make an almond butter and jelly tofu smoothie because I wanted a breakfast drink that tasted delicious and that was filled with lots of protein to kick off my day. Here's what I used in my smoothie:
- Silken Tofu
- Almond Milk
- Almond Butter
- Ice
- Frozen Raspberries

👩🍳 What kind of tofu should I use in a smoothie?
If you're purchasing tofu as a smoothie ingredient, be sure to purchase silken tofu. You don't have to press/drain silken tofu and it's soft and creamy, making it perfect for adding to a smoothie.
This smoothie recipe makes two large smoothies and calls for one 16 oz. block of tofu. If you want four smaller smoothies, you can certainly divide this drink into four smaller glasses.
🥤 How to make almond butter and jelly tofu smoothies
Like most smoothie recipes, this almond butter and jelly tofu smoothie is incredibly easy to make. It does require two different mixtures in the blender: one for the almond butter mixture and one for the "jelly" mixture.
For the almond butter layer, I blended the following:
- Silken Tofu
- Almond Milk
- Almond Butter
- Ice
If you'd rather make a peanut butter and jelly tofu smoothie, you can certainly replace the almond butter with peanut butter.
Just blend until smooth and then pour into two tall glasses.
Clean out the blender and you're ready for the next layer.
I guess I should tell you that the "jelly" mixture isn't actually jelly. It's just meant to emulate the jelly in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This layer consists of:
- Silken Tofu
- Frozen Raspberries
- Almond Milk
You can really use any fruit of your choice for this layer. If you prefer a strawberry or grape "jelly" use those frozen fruits instead.
Blend all of these ingredients together until smooth.
Now, pour the "jelly" layer over the almond butter layers in your glasses and using a knife or spoon, swirl the two layers together a bit.
Add a straw and sip away!
One of my favorite things about this tofu smoothie is that it can be enjoyed pretty much any time of day. I think it makes the best breakfast as it's packed with protein and nutrients that will keep you full of energy...
But I'd also drink it as an afternoon snack. And I'd even enjoy it as dessert!
It's not an overly sweet smoothie, but has just a touch of sweetness thanks to the raspberries and the almond butter.
If you're using a no-sugar almond butter and unsweetened almond milk, you can add a little honey into the almond butter layer if you want.
Guess what? You can't taste the tofu at all in this tofu smoothie. I promise!
You can taste the almond butter and raspberries. And you'll definitely be reminded of an almond butter and jelly sandwich.
But a really, really creamy one. You can't taste the protein either... But it's there!
🎉 Variations on tofu smoothies
There are so many ways to enjoy tofu in smoothies and you can easily switch them up every day for variety. Here are some ideas:
- Use peanut butter or sunbutter instead of almond butter
- Use the dairy or dairy alternative of your choice
- Use any type of frozen fruit, like strawberries, blueberries, banana, or mango
- Add spinach or kale to make it a green tofu smoothie
- Add honey for extra sweetness
If you know me, you know I certainly don't follow a strict plant based diet. But I do love incorporating plant-based ingredients into my diet, making meatless meals, and finding ways to amp up the protein without meat.
Since the tofu blended so perfectly in this almond butter and jelly smoothie, I have a feeling I'll be adding tofu into even more smoothies in the future!
Shhh you don't even have to tell your loved ones... They won't notice aside from the fact they'll feel totally satisfied and happy after drinking a tofu smoothie!
