Though I'll almost never sit down and eat a stack of Oreo cookies, I absolutely love desserts that have Oreos incorporated into them.
Give me all the Oreo truffles, Oreo cheesecakes, Oreo cookie crusts, and Oreo popcorns.
And if an ice cream shop has Oreo ice cream, also known as cookies and cream ice cream, on the menu, you better believe I'm going to order it. That's true for mint Oreo, coffee Oreo, and just plain old Oreo cookie.
And now I can make a big batch of it at home with this super easy Oreo ice cream recipe!
❤️ Why you'll love this recipe
If you're a fan of Oreo cookie desserts, this homemade ice cream is a must-try for you!
Not only is it easy to make with a simple vanilla ice cream base, but it's absolutely packed with Oreos... When you're making it yourself, you can add as many as you want!
You'll want a batch of this cookies and cream ice cream in your freezer all summer long... And maybe even throughout winter, too!
🗒 Ingredients
This ice cream recipe doesn't have a lot of frills as I wanted the Oreos to be the star of the show! Here's everything you need (be sure to view the recipe card at the bottom of this post for ingredient amounts and full recipe instructions):
- Heavy cream
- Whole milk
- Granulated sugar
- Salt
- Vanilla extract
- Oreo cookies
You'll also need an ice cream maker as this is an ice cream that needs to be churned. I have had the KitchenAid ice cream attachment for years and absolutely love it.
🍦 How to make Oreo ice cream
This is easier than the average homemade ice cream in part because it's not a custard-based ice cream. It's egg-free and as simple as mixing the ingredients, chilling them, and churning them!
All you have to do is whisk together the heavy cream, milk, sugar, salt, and vanilla extract in a large bowl.
I use a lot of vanilla because I like for my Oreo ice cream to have a strong vanilla base.
Cover the bowl and put it in the fridge to chill for about 4 hours.
While the ice cream base is chilling, make sure your Oreo cookies are all nice and crushed.
You can easily do this in a food processor or blender, but a lot of times, I just put them in a large Ziplock bag and take a meat mallet to them.
I like to leave some pieces bigger.
Now you're ready to churn your ice cream! You'll want to do this according to your specific machine's directions, but it will likely be running for about 20 minutes.
When the ice cream is almost done processing, add in crushed Oreo cookies.
Mix until they're all nice and blended.
And transfer the ice cream to an airtight container and freeze for at least 4 hours before serving.
This recipe makes about 1 ½ quarts of ice cream and fits perfectly in these ice cream containers.
Serve your ice cream in bowls! I like to top the dessert with more crushed Oreos because why not?
I'm not even going to tell you how long it took me and my husband to eat the entire 1 ½ quarts of this Oreo ice cream.
It's absolutely packed with Oreo cookies and sweet vanilla flavor and is my ideal frozen treat.
Because this recipe doesn't use eggs, the ice cream is a bit icier than the typical custard-based ice cream, but the heavy cream still gives it a perfectly creamy consistency.
⏲️ How to store
Keep this ice cream in an airtight container in your fridge and it should keep fresh for about a month.
Make sure the temperature of your freezer is well-regulated as fluctuations can cause freezer burn.
🥚 Can I make this with eggs?
If you want to make this Oreo ice cream with a custard base (for a creamier, less icy consistency), you can easily adapt this recipe!
To do so follow these instructions:
Combine the heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, and salt in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is hot but not boiling.
While the cream and milk mixture is heating, whisk 4 egg yolks in a medium separate bowl until they are smooth.
Once cream and milk mixture is hot, gradually pour about a cup of it into the whisked egg yolks, whisking constantly to prevent the eggs from cooking (this is called tempering).
Slowly add the tempered egg yolks back into the saucepan with the remaining hot milk mixture and continue to cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
Now you're ready to pour the mixture into a large bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and chill it for at least 4 hours.
🎉 Variations on recipe
This recipe is perfect for anyone craving a nice big bowl of Oreo ice cream. But there are so many flavors that complement vanilla and chocolate Oreo cookies.
Here are fun ideas for some variations you can make on this recipe:
- Use whatever flavor of Oreo cookies you want. You can mix in Golden Oreos, Lemon Oreos, Birthday Cake Oreos, Peanut Butter Oreos, and even Double Stuf Oreos.
- Make mint Oreo ice cream. Add a little mint extract into the ice cream base or use my recipe for mint Oreo ice cream.
- Make coffee Oreo ice cream using my delicious recipe.
- Blend sprinkles into the mixture while you're churning it.
- Mix in chocolate chips or your favorite chocolate candy for even more delicious flavor. I especially love toffee pieces in this ice cream.
- Add swirls of chocolate sauce, peanut butter, marshmallow sauce, or peanut butter.
- Mix in crumbled brownies.
- Fold in fresh or frozen berries for a fruity touch.
There are so many ways to enjoy Oreo ice cream, you'll want to always have a quart or two in your freezer.
